Department: Natural Resources research group.
Contract type: Permanent.
Salary: £29,978 - £32,988 per annum depending on experience, plus benefits.
Location: London or Edinburgh.

This role is based in the forest team in the Natural Resources research group.
The forest team strives towards improved and equitable investment in local control of sustainable forests across the tropics. The focus is on three main areas: governance of forests; integration of forests values and financing in national and international decision-making frameworks, and; sustainable, viable and inclusive enterprises.
Initiatives currently run by the forest team focus on: community forestry in the Congo Basin; governance of Chinese investments in Africa; implementation of models for reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation; supporting forest and farm producer organisations for business and policy engagement; strengthening business support institutions for locally controlled forestry; sustainable forest-linked commodity chains, and; financing forest-linked enterprises.
Summary of role
To carry out research and field work, and support project management, with an initial (but not exclusive) focus on two projects:
1.NGOs collaborating for equitable and sustainable livelihoods in Congo Basin forests (CoNGOs), and
2.Strengthening forest and farm producer organisation for business and policy engagement (Forest and Farm Facility – FFF).
Profil recherché
To succeed in this role you will have a postgraduate degree (or exceptionally a highly distinguished graduate degree) in a relevant discipline, and an interest in the thematic areas of forest governance, forest enterprise development and forest-climate linkages.
You will have a good knowledge of institutions, actors and current debates and research agendas in forestry in developing countries. You will have some experience working overseas ideally in West Africa and particularly the Congo Basin. You will be fluent in French and in English with excellent verbal and written communication skills. Finally, you will have a good understanding of the challenges facing poor people in rural environments and be willing to travel frequently
