Title: Postdoctoral research associate position in France: Assessment of the economic viability of a lithium industry in Europe.
Global lithium demand is expected to surge over the next 10 years to meet rapid growth in demand from battery and energy storage applications. Lithium is mainly produced from two sources: brines and hard rock deposits. Production from hard-rock deposits in Australia (Greenbushes) accounted for almost half of the world production in 2015 and 2016.
Europe has significant hard rock lithium resources (pegmatites and granites) which vary widely in grade, tonnage, mineralogical and geochemical composition (Ta, Sn, Be etc.). There is however a need to update the resource and reserve data incorporating the most recent estimates acquired during current exploration projects (Finland, Germany, Portugal, Spain, etc.).
The French Centre for Excellence Voltaire (Geofluids and VOLatils ? Earth, Atmosphere - Resources and Environment) invites applications for a postdoctoral research associate position to assess the economic viability of a lithium industry in Europe on the basis of the resource geological suitability and socio-economic factors.
Tasks:
- Produce an updated inventory of existing European lithium resource data and of geological/mineralogical characteristics.
- Match the best available processing technology with the mineralisation types encountered (including production cost, energy efficiency).
- Assess the socio-economic parameters and government policies (tax incentive policies) which could lead to - or prevent - the development of a sustainable lithium industry in Europe.
