Description du poste
Meteo France International is looking for a WRF model expert in the frame of one of its major projects in Asia. This expert will provide technical expertise on improving the WRF models for the local tropical conditions, by all the available tools necessary: verification, data assimilation, code modification, initialization strategies, etc…
MISSIONS
Under the responsibility of the Technical Director and in close technical collaboration with the Task Center Product Manager, the WRF expert will be in charge of setting up a coherent, reliable and objective strategy for the quantitative improvement of the WRF models deployed at our client’s headquarters. Namely, he/she should be able to:
1) Assess the quality of the models
• Develop and use state of the art verification techniques to quantify how the models are performing
• Provide clear statistics that allow for proper model control
• Identify areas where the model is clearly under-performing and propose a way to improve on these areas
• Ensure the documentation (manuals, technical documentation , etc. ) of all processes involved, so as to be able to provide an improvement strategy.
2) Mainly: Improve the quality of the model
• adopt best settings depending on geoclimate context of the client and proven experiences in similar context
• Based on the identified flaws, suggest a methodology to improve the model
• Test this methodology by developing code and/or processing modifications in the WRF suite
• Optimize the configuration of this secondary WRF (release candidate)
• Quantify the improvement over a significant period of time via intercomparison of the operational WRF and the new release candidate
• If the improvement is deemed satisfactory, assist the Task Center product manager in implementing the improved WRF
3) Assist other WRF experts with different specific fields of expertise
• Identify other technical solutions to further improve the WRF
• Work in coordination with those experts to further improve the WRF and quantify these improvements

EXPECTED SKILLS
Required Experience:
• Development with the WRF model (2 years+) or similar experience
Desirable Experience:
• Objective verification of NWP
• Subjective verification of NWP
• Operational NWP
• On-duty forecasting
• Observations Quality control
• Data assimilation
• On-duty forecasting
Required Technical Skills:
• Experience of verification packages (eg MET, R, etc) or good academic knowledge of statistics
• Knowledge of Linux (RedHat / CentOS ) and bash shell
• Basic experience in programming languages (eg: Fortran90, C, Python).
Education:
• Basic Meteorology
• Operational forecasting
• Statistics and verification theory
• Model Physics
• Advanced knowledge of Tropical and/or mid-latitude Meteorology
Skills:
• Sense of customer relationship and management of suppliers
• Interest for export and multicultural environments
• Autonomy
• Sense of organization
• Teamwork
• Ability to draft documentations
Profile:
• PhD degree in Meteorology or equivalent
• Significant experience from minimum 2 to 5 years (depending on the experience) in NWP
Languages:
• Excellent practice of international English (reading / writing / speaking)
• Knowledge of French would be a plus.
Position based in Toulouse – France. The applicant must be eligible to work in France.
This job is a temporary position for a maximum duration of 18 months (renewable once within that period).
